NDLEA Foils Attempted Cocaine Smuggling by ‘Businessman’ at Enugu Airport

On December 9, 2023, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) operatives intercepted twelve consignments of cocaine at the Akanu Ibiam International Airport (AIIA), Enugu. The illicit substances were linked to a Drug Trafficking Organization.

The arrest unfolded as Augustine Justine Emeka, a 44-year-old man who claimed to be involved in the copper wire trade, arrived at the airport from Douala, Cameroon, via Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, aboard Ethiopia Airlines. The apprehended suspect was found in possession of the twelve consignments, comprising seven hundred and ninety-seven (797) pellets of cocaine, totaling 17.6 kilograms. In the initial interrogation, the suspect confessed that the cocaine consignments were intended for delivery to twelve different individuals within the country.
In a connected incident, on December 8th, NDLEA operatives at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Ikeja Lagos apprehended Onyejiuwa Prince Ifeanyi. He had been evading capture since September 8th after the interception of a 20kg cannabis consignment destined for the United Kingdom. The illicit cargo was concealed within tomato paste tins and was seized at the SAHCO shed, which was linked to the fleeing suspect.
Similarly, on December 4th, the Seaports Operations unit of the Agency detained a 45-year-old Beninese, Jamila Fatiu, at Ebute Ero Jetty in Lagos Island. She was found in possession of 398 bottles of codeine cough syrup while en route to Seme border via a boat service.
